Senior Product Lifecycle Engineer

The Senior Product Lifecycle Engineer leads engineering product development and sustainment activities for mobile cleaning equipment within the Industrial Category. This position primarily leads cross-functional teams that sustain electro-mechanical machines in the areas of gross margin or cost of goods sold (COGS) improvement, design quality, and general product sustainment support. Additionally, this role contributes to cross-functional teams that design and develop innovative electro-mechanical machines and features that meet requirements for performance, quality, product cost, and project timelines. 


The Senior Product Lifecyle Engineer will have the opportunity to lead engineering development activities within the Life-Cycle Management Team for Tennant's Industrial Product Category. The successful candidate will lead project teams in areas of gross margin or cost of goods sold (COGS) improvement, design quality, and general product sustainment support needs. Additionally, this role will drive continuous improvement on current production machines including design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA), corporate initiatives on product platforming and design simplification, cost and gross margin improvements, warranty and design quality improvements, production / line-down support, supply chain support, sales support, regulatory compliance, and part obsolescence. Additionally this role: 

  • Develop and direct projects to improve cost efficiency, throughput, and reduce costs.
  • Actively find new opportunities for cost improvement, reduce production costs, and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules including project plans that identify work scope, schedules, milestones, tasks, priorities, risks.
  • Support weekly and monthly reporting and analysis needs to maintain adequate understanding of ongoing cost performance. Synthesize data to provide actionable insights.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to influence and lead complex projects with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Applies principles of engineering and science to lead the development of product designs at the machine and subsystem level that deliver lasting customer value and competitive advantage.
  • Identifies and investigates technology developments relevant to assigned subsystems.
  • Leads and mentors junior engineers and designers throughout the product lifecycle. 
  • Leverages laboratory and field test data to understand and manage design trade-offs.
  • Collaborates closely with cross-functional partners and leads the Engineering development project teams to achieve project goals in the areas of performance, cost, quality and schedule.
  • Works with internal and external suppliers to identify subsystem or component design improvement opportunities that achieve performance and cost target goals.
  • Leads and participates in formal/informal design reviews.
  • Plans and executes prototype builds at the machine and subsystem level.
  • Plans and supports machine and subsystem verification and validation testing.
  • Map and document processes. Independently identify process gaps; recommend and implement cost process improvement.

  • Broad technical knowledge in the design and development of electromechanical equipment.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information to a variety of internal and external groups.
  • Proficiency in CAD desired (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Ability to establish priorities, manage multiple complex projects, and rapidly adapt/respond to changes in environment and priorities.


Required Experience

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical or Systems Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited four-year college or university.
  • MS in Engineering preferred.
  • Six to Ten years of design engineering experience and project leadership experience 
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus.
  • Six Sigma experience a plus.
