Product Lifecycle Systems Engineer

The Product Lifecycle Systems Engineer supports engineering product development and sustainment activities for mobile cleaning equipment in the Industrial Category. This position primarily supports cross-functional teams that sustain electro-mechanical machines in the areas of product sustainment, gross margin or cost of goods sold (COGS) improvement, and design quality. Additionally, this role contributes to cross-functional teams that design and develop innovative electro-mechanical machines and features that meet requirements for performance, quality, product cost, and project timelines. 

Additionally this role: 

  • Applies principles of engineering and science to contribute to the development and sustainment of product designs at the machine and subsystem level that deliver lasting customer value and competitive advantage.
  • Creates new concepts for machine sub-systems and component designs as necessary to support product lifecycle development activities 
  • Maintains machine level performance specifications to meet customer needs and contributes to evolution of these specifications over time.
  • Prepares concepts, layouts, models, sketches and/or schematic diagrams to aid in the understanding and solution of engineering problems.
  • Determines nature and type of engineering models, detail drawings, and analysis required for machine and subsystem development, and supervises their completion through the development cycle.
  • Executes research/development activities to establish and achieve technical evolution of assigned systems.
  • Identifies and investigates technology developments relevant to assigned subsystems. 
  • Leverages laboratory and field test data to understand and manage design trade-offs.
  • Collaborates closely with cross-functional partners and supports the Engineering development team to achieve product lifecycle goals in the areas of performance, cost, quality and schedule.
  • Supports creation and sustainment of electro-mechanical designs, specifications, and drawing releases.  
  • Prepares product designs in compliance with engineering principles, company standards, government regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Establishes machine and subsystem development plans and schedules from concept to production implementation within overall business requirements.  Tracks and reports progress to the cross-functional program leader and engineering management.
  • Works with internal and external suppliers to develop subsystem designs that achieve performance and cost targets.
  • Leads and participates in formal/informal design reviews.
  • Plans and executes prototype builds at the machine and subsystem level.
  • Plans and supports machine and subsystem verification and validation testing.
  • Supports production launch and production sustainment needs
  • Documents machine level and subsystem design knowledge to ensure future value to the organization.
  • Provides design governance throughout a product’s lifecycle

 

Required Skills

  • Broad technical knowledge in the design and development of computer controlled electromechanical systems.
  • Experience working on cross functional teams (Hardware, Software, Systems, Vendors, Production, Sourcing, etc.) in all phases of system development, qualification, and product sustainment
  • Capable of contributing to teams in structured problem solving. Ability to drive root cause identification and corrective action leading to timely resolution.
  • Creative / innovative problem solving.
  • Self-starter, able to successfully plan and manage project design and development activities.
  • Data based decision making / statistical analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to model and predict system performance based on engineering principles.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information to a variety of internal and external groups.
  • Experience with FMEA and 8D problem solving methods
  • Some experience with communication protocols, such as CANOpen, etc. is a plus
  • Experience with power electronics/systems, and closed loop control systems is a plus
  • Experience with requirements management tools (JAMA), defect tracking and project management tools (JIRA) a plus

 

Required Experience

  • BS in Electrical, Systems, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited four-year college or university.
  • MS in Engineering a plus.
  • Three to six years of design engineering and cross functional project team experience preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus.
  • Six Sigma experience a plus.
