Sustainable Enterprise Director

  • Develops, deploys, maintains, and owns the Sustainable Enterprise (SE) strategy; SE objectives, goals, and metrics; and related internal and public communications.
  • Orchestrates continuous improvement in Tennant Company’s standing as measured by leading and relevant Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Raters (examples: ISS, MSCI, Sustainalytics, & ISS-oekom) and NGOs (examples: CDP, UNGC, etc.).
  • Advocates and speaks to ensure key stakeholders recognize the value of Tennant Company’s Sustainable Enterprise investment.
  • Scope is global enterprise - all business units, functions, and locations.



  • Considers Sustainable Enterprise (SE) initiatives from across the full enterprise value stream and product life cycle spectra
  • Prioritizes SE initiatives by assessing stakeholder needs and balancing them against materiality (relevance, importance)
  • Defines specific SE initiatives & projects in collaboration with key internal stakeholders, then gains leadership buy-in/approval
  • Drives for continuous improvement on existing SE objectives & goals
  • Defines new SE objectives & goals as required
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to develop and operationalize embedded decision making frameworks and processes (examples: Capital Planning Template, Capital Equipment Request (CER), New Product Development Process, etc.)
  • Works to incorporate appropriate environmental footprint reduction and/or social improvement objectives and goals in business units and functions
  • Collaborates with Sales to gain key accounts which emphasize sustainability as part of their businesses
  • Partners with GLT and other leaders to identify, engage, train, develop, and maintain passionate, embedded sustainability experts in all functional areas and business units
  • Advocates for and strengthens Tennant’s brand equity in sustainability via external networking, service, and selective engagement with new business, technology, and research forums
  • Responsible for annual:
  • Corporate Sustainability Report (CSR) with Corporate Communications as a key partner
  • Communication on Progress (CoP) – Tennant Company is a United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) signatory\CDP Climate Change Response\Defines specific roles and responsibilities for the SE team\Leads the SE team



  • BA or BS in Business, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental Studies. A focus on Sustainability is preferred.
  • MS Degree or other Graduate level Sustainability training is preferred
  • 15+ years of Business experience or 10+ years Govt. / NGO exp. plus at least 5 years Business experience
  • For external candidates, 3-5 years experience in a sustainability leadership role
  • Knowledge of Tennant business model, products, customer needs, organization, etc. is a strong plus

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain high quality relationships with recognized leaders in Industry, Government, Academia, and NGOs
  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships with diverse stakeholders and successfully collaborate - both inside & outside of the organization
  • Thinks with a strong bias to the future, while simultaneously delivering on goals and objectives to insure today’s business success
  • Demonstrated ability to discern evolving technical, business, societal, and demographic trends - then turn trend insights into business advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Deep understanding of the power of story. Able to partner with Corporate Communications and Marketing in using stories for influence and inspiration, both internally and externally.
  • Acts with a strong bias to agility & adaptability, not process bound
  • Demonstrated track record of success in prior Change Agent roles
  • Demonstrated ability to operate globally, with a clear understanding of the “power of culture”
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at strategic level (SMT, Board of Directors) and act as strong organizational role model
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in dealing with highly confidential information
  • Demonstrated strong ability to influence effectively
